As we live in a world where girls are stereotyped to being passive, soft and vain individuals, fewer marketing strategies were geared to attract female gamers than males into the gaming industry.
When the marketing of kitchen appliances, food items and home care supplies aims to attract women consumers, the promotion of computer games was almost always directed towards the male clients.
Perhaps this is because girls were expected not to appreciate the simulation, action and violent stories included in the computer games. Also, girls were less expected to aim guns at villains, or aliens, or fellow players' representation in the computer world. It may also be due to less tolerance of majority of the female species to blood and gore.
Another point to be taken is that most of the characters in these computer games are men. This makes the games less appealing to girls, as they couldn't play a character the can closely resemble themselves.
But these issues are resolved when the Bratz: Rock Angelz game was released.
The game was specially developed for young girls of ages four to fourteen. Unlike other role-playing and simulation games, a player can control any of the four Bratz girls - Jade, Chloe, Yasmin and Sasha.
More than that, the characters are fully customizable. A player can select the characters' outfits, hairstyle and makeup to keep up with the latest fashion trends.
The Bratz: Rock Angelz storyline starts after Jade was fired from her summer internship for Your Thing Magazine. The Bratz girls then started to start their own fashion magazine.
The game is filled with mini games and assignments, majority of which includes shopping. The Bratz girls need to shop for new wardrobe, change clothes, coordinate a new wardrobe, purchase and apply new makeup, create a new image, and design new t-shirts and posters. After completing a task or a mini-game, the player is awarded with some money to spend and the game advances to the next level.
There are also other fun things in which the Bratz girls could spend some time. A character can pose for photo shoots, roller skate, take pictures of animals, interact and do someone's makeup. Of course, this should also include the major goal, which is to gather materials and scoops for their "Bratz Magazine."
A thing similar to other simulation and role-playing games is the aspect of the game where the player collects coins, or money to spend. As some of the money may be obtained by completing assignments, sometimes, coins may also appear while the character is simply walking or shopping or trying on new clothes. This is comparable with other computer games where players collect coins or other valuable items to use for trade or to gain points.
The Bratz: Rock Angelz game also has an option to befriend animals, such as bunnies, and take their pictures for completing the tasks.
This game is geared to attracting young female players, so it lacks the guns, blood and gore associated with most simulation games. Where the adventure in other games depend on how many of the villains were killed, how many doors were unlocked and how spells were cast, the Bratz: Rock Angelz adventure depend on the journeys undertaken and the celebrities met by the Bratz in order to publish their Bratz Magazine.
The Bratz: Rock Angelz game is available in PC, Nintendo GameCube, GameBoy Advance and Playstation 2 platforms.
